Do I have to install anything?

No! Isn’t that great? Unlike rooftop solar which requires the installation of solar panels on your home–and a significant capital investment from you–community solar is a subscription service to participate in solar generated elsewhere. With your subscription, you’re telling your utility provider that you want energy from solar arrays (also called solar gardens) that are installed in a centralized location and shared.

How much can I save?

Typically, consumers see savings of around 25% of their current utility cost. On average, the data shows savings of about $138 a year for most households. Compared to the approximately $12,000 up-front cost to install rooftop solar panels and the 8 or so years it takes to realize the return on investment (ROI) for that installation, community solar savings are immediate and significant. It also provides an option for solar energy if you rent and can’t install rooftop solar panels where you live.

Where are these solar gardens installed?

Many solar gardens are built on capped landfills, open fields, or warehouse roofs. These local installations on under-used spaces (like rooftops!) supply energy to your local electricity grid. Subscribing is an easy way to support clean energy generation in your community.

How do I get involved?

To join community solar with American Solar, all you have to do is subscribe! As a subscriber you receive credits for your share of the electricity generated by your community solar installation (aka “net metering credits”). These net metering credits reduce the amount of electricity billed to your account each month. Those credits are your cost savings.

How will I be billed if I subscribe?

With a subscription, the billing process has two stages. First, you will receive the net metering credits on your monthly electric utility bill for your share of the generation created by your community solar project. Then, after you have received you net metering credits, you will be billed for a percentage of those credits. Your monthly bill will also show how your participation impacts the environment each month. This billing process makes your savings and your environmental impact clear every month!
